Paintings exploring connection, observation and belonging through intimate studies of the Australian bush.
Working from locations explored on foot and documented through his own photography, Simpson's Understory paintings focus on the often-overlooked environments beneath the forest canopy. Colour-rich foregrounds are contrasted against monochromatic landscapes, creating a tension between immersion and distance, intimacy and scale. Through this visual language, the works explore how we experience place, inviting reflection on the relationships that connect us to landscape, memory and the natural world.
